    Is Fibromyalgia Real? Symptoms Of fibromyalgia conditions can be confusing…

    “Are you afraid of being sick?”, the doctor asked. I know I am not the first one to be judged for consulting a doctor to cure “body ache”. When the doctors themselves don’t shy away from snubbing and judging the women who are suffering from fibromyalgia, just because they don’t believe in the condition, what would poor patients do? Trust me he is one of the leading neurologists in Kochi. So I was left wondering “Is fibromyalgia real?”. For more than a year I lived in denial because the doctor said so. As the days went by, my pain worsened and I was unable to pinpoint the source of pain as it kept on radiating throughout the body. That’s when my time overlapped with my Holistic Wellness journey. My Yoga, meditation, EFT tapping, reflexology, and all practices worked, and slowly the pain subsided, including severe ENT problems too.

    Fibromyalgia is an invisible symptom that doesn’t have symptoms that are evidently visible to others. This is where the real struggle of convincing the healthcare providers, coworkers, and even friends and family comes into the picture. In addition to the pain, the patients would also have sleep issues, mood swings, and memory problems. These are often conveniently ignored by the people around as a normal daily struggle.

    The fact that more than half of the healthcare providers including neurologists is a fact that needs to be addressed on a larger scale because the person who is in pain feels neglected. This in turn could affect their emotions and have a psychological impact on them. Eventually, they leave it to themselves as they become exhausted from the travail.

    Why the symptoms can be confusing?

    Fibromyalgia has a cluster of symptoms that could overlap with other conditions like arthritis. Hence there is no definitive treatment for the condition. Since the symptoms vary, the cure is more or less an experiment. Nonetheless, the World Health Organisation has already recognized it as a disease and hence the doctors who deny hardly make any sense. They should rather update their medical knowledge up to date to consider fibromyalgia real.

    I was lucky enough to be introduced to the condition by my ENT specialist. Lest I would have left behind wondering myself that I was being lazy. Further, I went ahead and started my therapy by being my therapist. The first step was to stop asking and start acting by making fibromyalgia real in my psyche.     When it comes to politics in office, credit theft is another evil that you cannot escape. But you can raise your voice if needed provided you have kept all communications and activities recorded. This enables you to have the proof for the arguments that you raise.

    We procrastinate our journey to success due to a lack of confidence or fear of failure. The thought of getting going itself sends a feeling of insecurity and fear. The reason for the fear could be anything – judgement, failure, family, relatives, strangers. The more we look outside for inspiration, the more you see reasons to pull yourself back.     Practicing mindfulness is not a herculean task nor an easy one. To train your mind to be in the moment and to prevent it from wandering around as well as bringing in negative energy, immense practice and perseverance is needed. With more research and information coming out in relation with mindful living, more are more people have started learning about it.

    Mindfulness is the practice of bringing your awareness to the present moment at the present physical location that you are in. In short the experience is something that you view as a third person. You need to find yourself out of it. You need not attain any special talent to practice mindfulness. It is a natural skill of human beings, but it need to be practiced with the help of a mindfulness coach if you need to attain maximum results. This way you defeat your fear and where mind is without fear you are leading a mindful living.

    Another important factor that your must know about being mindful is that it is not cconnected with any religion. It has nothing to do with your will power. It is all about the practice.

    It starts with seeing the minutest details of things around you and the texture, color, consistency. Slowly build up and widen your vision. Observe yourself as a third person without engaging in the train of thoughts. This is a slow and lengthy transformation.     Life can be colorful or black and white or in the shades of grey. It’s up to you as to how you would paint it. Every one of you might have lost your key at least once. Searching everywhere desperately you would think, I should have taken a little more care. While searching all over, you might miss a place where it is obvious to find the key or anything for that matter. This is the classic human tendency to ignore the obvious. This is the same with your life as well. You want to be happy and peaceful. In search of happiness and peace, you roam around, embrace religion, and spirituality, and go behind the ‘self-help gurus’ but eventually realize that this is not it. Because the meaning of mindfulness, happiness, peace, and contentment is different for different people. Or you would be lucky enough to realize that it was inside you all along.

    I have been attending one course after the other from different tutors. At the end of the day, you realize that the beliefs of one coach might contradict the other. Hence blindly following anyone would be a bad idea in itself.

    Seeing inner peace and happiness is not everyone’s cup of tea. Any Guru or coach can show you the path. You have to walk down the lane yourself. To let that happen, the first step is to admit your mistakes. Own them. Noone in the world is responsible for solving your problems. The moment the realization dawns upon you, you will embark on your journey.

    Just like identifying your triggers, taking the responsibility for your problems is also a key factor in your quest for peace and happiness.

    The goddess with numerous hands – Classic case of benevolent sexism

    A common stereotype that has been conveniently propagated is that of a woman or a goddess with numerous hands doing household chores, taking care of kids, cooking, working, and more. This is the stamp that the world has been imposing on you. Yes, a woman is capable of unimaginable feats. But who decides that she should do all that by herself? These traditional gender stereotypes are created by subtle attempts of benevolent sexism. To know further we must look deeply into different types of sexism.

    Ambivalent sexism

    Ambivalent sexism is the theory that differentiates sexism in two forms – Hostile and Benevolent Sexism.

    1. Hostile sexism

    Hostile sexism is the most flagrant version of sexism where men/women openly proclaim that men are superior to women. The dominance of men is practiced in no uncertain terms. This is a version of male chauvinism. Strangely it has another aspect to it – Female chauvinism. Often feminism is often misconstrued as female chauvinism. While the former talks about equality, the latter is all about hostile sexism. International women’s day is also a reminder that women need not snub their male counterparts so as to uplift their worth and rights. Hostile sexism reflects misogyny and finds women as incompetent lot.

    2. Benevolent sexism

    This is a subtler form of sexism where women who comply with the traditional gender stereotypes are kept on a pedestal, more like goddesses. A subtle way to say that women are must do certain things in a certain way and men should protect and pamper them. This is an injustice to both genders and also the other genders. This form of sexism is also dangerous as it indirectly forces the woman to prioritize her relationships and prevents her from pursuing her dreams by taking her along for a guilt trip. Sadly, this form of sexism is prevalent and widely accepted.

    18. Gentlemen pull the chair, hold handbags and open the doors for women

    On an ending note, there is also a classic dialogue that I have heard – “I will teach your lesson and you will rise after nine months”. Well it is neither benevolent, nor hostile but it is an open rape threat.

Pari watched the scene unfold before her but she didn’t feel the urge to stop him like every day. She didn’t want to denounce the injustice for this is her day. The wind whispered the secret to the stars when clouds sprinkled tiny beads of love for their favorite child is celebrating. Today all her wishes will be granted. It is her day, she will rule…

    The lucky charm

    Pari, as the name suggests, is a fairy in a world of happiness. Her birth was a celebration as she is the first fairy girl of the generation. The pampered little girl was always guarded and spoiled rotten by the fairies. Nonetheless, Pari could not beam in the unrelenting deluge of affection. She wanted to see the world, grant wishes, and be with humans. “Why am I denied the joy of what I am destined for?” she would ask her mother but never got a reply. As she grew, Pari’s desire to see the human world grew with her. Her yearning didn’t go unnoticed.

    As always, Pari was looking at the earth through the wounds of the fairies where the sun punched the hole to mesmerize the humans and spread light in their world. She could never fathom the relevance of spilling blood for spreading luminescence. While she was immersed in her muse, her mother’s gentle touch brought her back. “He has agreed to meet you”, she said. Pari was rooted to the spot, unable to utter a word. Years of waiting, uncountable requests, and unrelenting tears later, finally, He acquiesced. She is going to meet the ultimate power. The Creator himself.

    With trembling steps she went to Him. Pari was dumbstruck at what she saw. Amidst the fairies who were being stabbed in the morning, he was sitting with his legs crossed, no! he was floating. She could see the wind play with them, the fire pampered them and the earth remained dark. “Your wish will be granted today,” He said. Pari was shaken out of her reverie. “You can ask anything you would like and start granting wishes to humans from today. But on one condition,” he added. Pari looked at him with narrowed eyes. ‘Now what tricky condition is he going to put forward’ she thought.

    “You have to go to earth and the moment you land, you must meet the people whom you see there. Talk to each one of them and come back,” he said. Pari was ecstatic. Isn’t that her wish too? Immediately she agreed to the condition and set out to the earth. She could see the Sun sharpen his scimitar but she had no time to wait. Journey to the earth seemed longer than she imagined. But somehow she had to do it for this is her destiny. When she landed on the earth, she saw flowers everywhere, wearing the garlands of mist and waiting for the sun to emerge.

    The mistake

    She looked around for humans but there was only a handful. ‘Oh! this seems so easy. I have to meet only 4 people and can go back. I will finish it in a minute’, a smile escaped through her parted lips. Looking around, she saw a woman sitting in a corner, crying. She went to her and asked, “What happened? Why are you crying?.” The woman looked at her with lifeless eyes and said, ” I made a mistake.”

    “Mistake? What mistake,” Pari asked. “I gave birth to a girl,” the woman said. Pari was shocked. “Giving birth to a girl is a mistake? What are you saying? I have heard that when I was born, every universe was celebrating.” The woman smiled but life has churned the soul out of her and her smile couldn’t reach her eyes. Pari wanted to ask more but she had a task to complete and get back to her world so that she could get what she asks for. She patted the woman on her shoulders and took leave.

    She saw a girl in her teenage sitting with a knife in her hand. Pari ran to her and took the knife. “The knife is so sharp. My mother has told me that we should not play with sharp objects lest it will hurt us.” The girl turned to Pari with anger, surprise, and apprehension pasted on her face. “What happened to you? Did you give birth to a girl too?” Pari asked.

    “No, I didn’t give birth to a girl but I too made a mistake.” The girl said. Pari looked at her in askance. “My mistake is that I wore short clothes,” the girl said.

    “What are you saying? Is that even a mistake?” Pari asked. “Yes, it is. By wearing short clothes, I provoked them. If I hadn’t worn them, they would not have done this to me.” she said. Pari could not understand the cryptic verses nor did she want to because she had to reach somewhere. Hence she moved to the next person.

    By now, she knew the drill and asked. “Did you make a mistake too?” The lady whom she talked to was a nun. She said,” Yes, I too did a mistake. I didn’t give birth to a girl or wear short clothes but despite being a nun, I wanted to sing and dance,” she said. Pari could not take it any longer. She looked up and asked her Creator, “What kind of world have you made? One cannot give birth to a girl, or wear short clothes and even worse sing or dance.” When she looked down, she saw a woman wearing a black robe. She went to her and asked ” You are not wearing short clothes, nor can you give birth or dance at this age. What is your mistake?”

    “I went out in the night,” saying this, she looked away. Pari felt like the whole world was crumbling down on her. On one hand, she thought the sun has been cruel and the creator has been unfair to let the fairies get stabbed. On the other hand, the world that she yearned to own is full of unfathomable rules.

    “WHAT IS MY MISTAKE?” everyone was shocked. They looked at each other to see the origin of the oracle. “Why are you looking at each other? Look down,” it continued. They looked down and could not get their head around what they saw. A chill ran down Pari’s spine.

    The voice went on ” What is my mistake? I cannot sing, I cannot dance, I cannot go out alone, I cannot give birth to a girl. Much less, I have just come out of my mother’s womb about less than a year back. What is my mistake?     About the story

    I myself don’t know when this story took birth. It was all along in me. Maybe it did when my classmate molested me and I had no idea about what was happening. (I was just nine and had no worldly knowledge like kids of this age. Maybe it did when years later, he relived the fun he had, with his own fictional adaption, and reproduced them to his friends as a nine-year-old girl’s sexual drive. Funnily I had no memory of the incident). Maybe it did when powered by these stories, the men and boys started hitting on me and asking me for my rate for a day. Maybe it did when I regained my courage, years later.

    Or maybe it did when I had my daughter and as a post-delivery shock or some magic or some scientific reason fathomable to only mental health experts, the blocked memory resurfaced and I started reliving the moments. Maybe it did when this memory that emerged changed my relationship for good. Or, maybe it did when I turned out to be a hysteric overprotective mother. Maybe it did when I embraced Holistic Wellness to heal myself. I have never shared this on any public platform yet though I have never shied away from opening up to friends.     Knowing your health features spares us the pain of maintaining and using numerous gadgets to check the vitals. This is the first in the industry and the primary members and family members also can use this feature.
